PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO:

In the mid-1970s, a boom in per diem box cars began. Many new, brightly painted box cars, lettered for short lines, appeared. FMC was a major builder of these cars. The 50’ outside post, non-terminating end box car became the basis for new per diem cars in the 1970s. These cars had different door configurations to suit customers and can still be seen in modern railroading.
