The Athearn ATH73739 is an HO scale model of the SD40 locomotive for the C&O Chesapeake & Ohio railroad, numbered #7451 and equipped with DCC and sound. In 1966, EMD delivered the first of five orders of SD40s to the C&O. These were the most powerful units at the time, weighing 394,000 pounds each and offering 82,100 lbs. of continuous tractive effort at 11.1 mph. Units 7450 - 7469, like this one, had a “35 style” paint scheme with yellow noses and small side initials. The SD40 in 1966 featured a new 645 diesel engine, delivering 3,000 hp from a turbocharged V16. Many were built for American, Canadian, and Mexican railroads. This model has great features like LED lighting, photo - etched windshield wipers, and separate wire grab irons. The sound - equipped models offer high - quality sound with a single cube speaker and work in both DC and DCC.

Using this Athearn HO scale SD40 locomotive model is easy. First, connect it to your track. If you're using DCC, you can use the Quick Plug™ plug - and - play technology with the 21 - pin NEM connector. For DC operation, it also works well, though some functions are limited. When running it, start at a low speed to ensure smooth operation. As for maintenance, keep the locomotive clean. You can use a soft brush to remove dust from the body, wheels, and other parts. Check the couplers regularly to make sure they're in good condition. When storing, use the interior plastic blister to safely hold the model. Make sure to keep it in a dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Also, follow the CV chart in the box if you want to change any functions of the locomotive.
